Pakistanis began to migrate to the United States in the 1970’s. Though Pakistanis residing in the United States is not a significant number yet, due to their tendency to live in clusters together around the country have made them a visible community.
Total Pakistani and Pakistani American population in early 2004 was approximately 500,000. The largest number of Pakistanis and Pakistani Americans live in New Jersey (95,000). After that it is New York (94,500), California (54,000), Texas (50,000), Illinois (37,000), Virginia (25,000), Florida (17,000), Maryland (13,000), Georgia (11,000) and Michigan (10,500).
(All figures are an approximation and the data has been collected from the US Census Bureau, US Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Embassy of Pakistan Consular information, and field samples of Pakistani American families.)
