Jobs and Internships on Capitol Hill

Internships:

The best way to obtain an internship on the Hill is to first start with your own Representative`s office.  Getting experience at a district office always helps when applying for an internship in Washington D.C. Check out internship oppurtunities at the PAL-C headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Go to www.congress.org and plug in your zip code to locate your representatives.  After that send them a cover letter and resume.  In your cover letter explain the reason why you are interested in working on the Capitol and emphasize your involvement in your local community.

Another route to internships is to network with people who have previously interned on Capitol Hill or are working with a congressman.  This is done through attending events such as fund-raisers in your community for Representatives.  Be proactive in your search for an internship.

Note: All internships on Capitol Hill are unpaid.

Congresswoman Linda Sanchez Washington Update

April 18, 2007

Dear Friend:

I want you to know about two paid internships I am offering this summer. I would appreciate you sharing this information with students from our region.

Congressional internships provide great academic and professional development opportunities for high school and college students. But most Congressional internships are unpaid, which makes it hard for many young people to take part who need to work and make money during the summer. To help, I have specially set aside money in my office budget for several paid internships for local students. This way, students of all financial backgrounds can compete for these opportunities.

** NEW -- “SUMMER IN WASHINGTON” CONGRESSIONAL INTERNSHIP

This summer, for the first time, I am offering a paid internship in my Washington, DC office. For eight weeks, a student will become a part of my Capitol Hill staff and get a chance to learn first-hand from seeing and joining my staff and me at work. For this eight week internship, the student will be paid $5,000. This level of salary will help a student cover the travel, housing, food, and incidental expenses during his or her summer in Washington. My office can provide a student with information on the many colleges in Washington that have summer dormitory accommodations.

The deadline to turn in a completed application for this internship is April 30. Please have any interested students contact my intern coordinator, Ms. Iram Hasan, at 562.860.5050 or at iram.hasan@mail.house.gov

DISTRICT OFFICE INTERNSHIP

Closer to home, I will once again be offering a paid summer internship in my local office, now situated in Cerritos. This position will pay $9.00 an hour. The student will also be eligible for free transportation assistance. The program begins with one day of intensive training, and follows with two to three months of professional development in areas such as social services, foreign language translation, office management, communications, and research. Throughout the program, interns will build a portfolio of work that demonstrates their achievements and experience.

The deadline to complete an application for my District Office Summer Internship is May 18. (I will also offer paid District Office Internships during the regular school year). Because of the travel and independent living requirements, the Washington internship is open only to students who have completed at least one year of college. The District Office internship is open to both high school and college students. Applicants for both internships must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.

You can learn more about the internship program on my Congressional webpage at: http://www.lindasanchez.house.gov/internship

Thank you in advance for your cooperation. If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact my intern coordinator, Iram Hasan, at 562.860.5050 or at iram.hasan@mail.house.gov

Sincerely,

Linda T. Sánchez
Member of Congress

An excellent book with pertinent and practical advice on how to obtain a job on the Hill is: How to Get a Job in Congress (Without Winning an Election) by Christopher Porter
The book is available at Amazon.com in paperback.

Review:
"How to Get a Job in Congress (Without Winning an Election) is by far one of the most useful books I have ever come across. As a person who recently returned to the DC area, I have to admit that this book helped me secure my current job. The author, Chris Porter, leaves nothing out. From his step by step employment guide, to the little things (such as the tricks to finding the right apartment) the book contains information only available to those who have gone through it all. The book is well written, lucid, and funny. I suggest this book to anyone thinking of working on Capitol Hill or knows of someone who is."
