The Pakistani American Leadership Center (PAL-C)
Since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the Islamic schools known as madrassas have been of increasing interest to officials interested in formulating U.S. foreign policy towards Pakistan. While many have accused Pakistani madrassas of promoting Islamic extremism and militancy, others maintain that most of these religious schools have been blamed unfairly for fostering anti-U.S. sentiments and argue that madrassas play an important role in a country where millions live in poverty and state educational infrastructure is in decay.
What is going on inside these madaris? What is true and what is not? Are they in anybody's control? What is the future for reform inside these religious institutions? Do these madaris threaten U.S. National Security Interests? How can U.S. policy encourage madrassa reform? What do we need to know more about madaris?
To answer these and many other questions, the Pakistani American Leadership Center (PAL-C) has organized a briefing with the leaders of Pakistan’s top Madrassa Oversight Board, the Ittihad Tanzeemat Madaris Deenia (ITMD). The ITMD Board oversees the individual madrassas boards belonging to each of the five sects that sponsor madrassas and is the body with the greatest power to institute reforms. The members of the ITMD have never visited USA in an official capacity and engaging them in a public forum will be an unprecedented effort.
